Councillor calls for speed reduction after accident at Beaver Lane, South Ashford

A borough councillor has called for safety measures in Beaver Lane after a boy was hit in a serious crash last week.

The 16-year-old pedestrian was taken to Kings Hospital in London with a head injury after being hit by a silver Ford Fiesta in South Ashford last Tuesday.

After the accident Beaver Ward member Cllr Chris Clark (Lab) felt action should be taken.

“I haven’t had any calls about a need for an extra crossing in that location, but I know many residents are concerned about speeding in the urban area," he said.

“I have been pressing Kent Highways to adopt 20mph speed restrictions in built-up areas like this.

He added: “Evidence shows that being hit at 20mph is far less likely to kill you than a collision at 30mph.”

However, he was told the authority does not implement safety measures until a certain number of accidents have taken place in a particular stretch of road.

“I don’t think we should have to wait for a tragedy to take place before action is taken that will undoubtedly save lives,” said Cllr Clark.

“I don’t think we should have to wait for a tragedy to take place before action is taken that will undoubtedly save lives,” said Cllr Clark.

“I hope Kent Highways will review their policy and put public safety first.”

Kent police are still appealing for witnesses to the accident.
