Conningbrook Lakes in Ashford closed for water activities after toxic algae found for a second time

A popular lake used for water sports in Ashford has been closed off once again due to the discovery of toxic algae.

Ashford Leisure Trust (ALT) took to social media this morning to announce that the main lake at Conningbrook Lakes will be closed until further notice because toxic Blue-Green Algae has been found growing in the area.

The algae, known as anabaena, has the potential to kill animals and trigger skin rashes in humans.

The lakes were closed off for the same reason for a period in summer last year.

They re-opened on July 8 when the naturally occurring phenomenon had disappeared quicker than expected.

In a statement on Facebook, ALT said: "Due to a growth of toxic Blue-Green Algae at Conningbrook Lakes and Country Park the main lake will be closed until further notice for all water based activities following advice from the Environment Agency.

"The park will remain open to members of the public for walking but dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and must not enter the water.

"Ashford Leisure Trust is working closely with the environment agency and the lake will be monitored with weekly water tests being taken and analysed.

"Further updates will be communicated once we have them."
