Binman nearly hit by impatient van driver in Ashford

Shocking footage taken from a Biffa bin lorry shows the moment a binman is nearly hit by an impatient driver in Ashford.

The video, taken in September last year but only just posted on Facebook, shows the lorry in the road, believed to be in South Ashford, as the binmen empty the streets rubbish.

As one of the binmen goes to return the empty bin, he narrowly avoids being struck by a grey van that mounted the pavement to overtake the lorry.

The binman was almost hit by the van.

The vehicle was close enough that it knocked the bins out of the man's hands, who appears to be injured as he then begins to rub his shoulder.

Phil Bovis, Biffa’s general manager for its Mid Kent contracts (Ashford, Swale and Maidstone), said: “Our collection crews already do a challenging job which shouldn’t be made more dangerous by the behaviour of impatient drivers.

"Biffa wants all its staff to go home safe and sound at the end of each working day.”

In 2016, Biffa launched the DRoP (driving recklessly on pavements) campaign to reduce "dangerous and aggressive driving and behaviour when bin collectors are out doing their job".

Figures from the company reveal that before the campaign launch, waste collectors across the UK were facing around 30,000 dangerous driving incidents every month.

The majority of which go unreported as "putting up with dangerous driving is part of the job".

Now, Biffa lorries are fitted with 360 degree cameras to help capture footage of these incidents, which have been vital in prosecuting dangerous drivers.
