The burst pipe was reported to Kent County Council yesterday afternoon.

A spokesman for the authority said: “Flooding on Chart Road was reported to us at 4.30pm.

“Due to the presence of sewerage this was referred to Southern Water with an urgent request to attend.

“To ensure the safety of road users, we worked closely with Kent Fire & Rescue Service and Kent Police to close the road until the flood water could be cleared.”

Traffic heading to or from Ashford town centre that would normally use Chart Road is being divert via Templer Way and the Drovers Roundabout.

Kent County Council Highways have apologised for "any inconvenience caused".
