Two drivers are being treated for serious injuries following a crash in Ashford which saw passers-by righting a blazing car and putting out the flames.

Police from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit have revealed how a Renault Clio travelling from Hamstreet along the A2070 suddenly veered across the carriageway in Ashford at around 8.45am today.

It hit a blue Perodua Kenari-GX Estate, which then overturned and burst into flames.

The Clio then ricocheted into the path of the Polo, suffering minor damage.

Members of the public forcibly righted the Perodua and put out the fire. Both vehicles suffered extensive front end damage.

The Perodua driver had to be cut free, and was flown to a London hospital with serious injuries.

Meanwhile, the Clio driver was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The road was reopened just after 1.30pm.

A police spokesman said: "Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit have carried out their investigation at the scene."
