Davey Bailey, 22, and pregnant partner Katie Ashton, 23 were at home at the time, and had to make a quick exit.

Davey said: “I was on my computer downstairs just behind the television, just feet away from the car. It went through the window and door at the house, then a group of three or four grabbed their stuff and ran off.

“It’s left me very shocked and it has knocked me. Certain things keep making me jump, and I couldn’t sleep all night.”

The car struck a gas main which had to be capped off by workmen. Two other families were told to leave their homes while structural engineers assess whether it is safe for them to return.

Davey managed to return to the property on Thursday to salvage some belongings and rescue his rescue kitten called Kitkat.

He said he and Katie are now homeless and are sharing a single bed at his mother’s house, and have lost items such as the buggy for Katie’s four-year-old child.

Katie, who is currently 28 weeks pregnant, had gone to bed when the accident happened downstairs. She said: “I heard this big bang and the curtains blew out of the window. I thought there had been an accident in the road.

“There was a then a horrible smell and people screaming telling everyone to get out and come down the stairs. I grabbed some clothes and got out as soon as possible.

“I don’t know how it happened, the car seemed to go in sideways. Now we don’t know how long it is going to be before it is sorted.”

Katie’s stepdad Will Taylor said he thought the couple were lucky that they weren’t on the sofa at the time of the crash, otherwise they could have been hit by the car.

Police have confirmed an 18-year-old man was arrested and bailed in connection with the incident.

Davey and Katie have appealed for help to find alternative accommodation for a short period of time. If you can help, email: kentishexpress@thekmgroup.co.uk.
