M20 vehicle fire causes traffic delays between Ashford and Maidstone

The M20 was partially blocked for nearly two and a half hours after a car caught fire near Ashford.

It happened on the London-bound stretch of the M20, between Junction 9 (Ashford) and Junction 8 (Leeds Castle/Maidstone Services).

Emergency services, including fire crews, attended.

One lane was blocked and traffic was moving slowly while recovery work was carried out.

A spokesman for fire service said: "We were called to a car fire on the M20, between junctions 8 and 9 on the London-bound carriageway.

"One fire engine attended and crews extinguished the blaze. There were no reported casualties."

A police spokesman added: "Kent Police was called at 1.21pm on Thursday 28 November to a report a vehicle had broken down on the M20 Londonbound between junctions 9 and 8.

"The car is reported to have caught alight and the fire was safely extinguished by Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

"Recovery for the vehicle has been arranged."
