Kent Fire and Rescue Service called to chimney fire in Bond Lane, Kingsnorth, Ashford

A fire that started in a chimney at an old Ashford home spread to other parts of the house before firefighters got it under control.

Crews were called to the home in Bond Lane, Kingsnorth, believed to have been built in the 16th century, at 7.30pm yesterday.

One fire engine went initially but a second was called when firefighters realised the blaze was so hot it had spread to part of the floor.

But they managed to stop the flames and prevent any more damage to the building.

No one was injured in the fire, which crews spent two-and-a-half hours putting out.

Firefighter Gary McPhee said the people in the house had done the right thing by getting out and calling the fire brigade. They also had smoke alarms fitted.
