Cllr Gerry Clarkson new leader of Ashford Borough Council

Cllr Gerry Clarkson was last night confirmed as the new leader of Ashford Borough Council.

His appointment follows the sudden death of the former leader Cllr Peter Wood on Friday, March 1.

Cllr Clarkson (Con), pictured centre below, who has been acting leader since Cllr Wood passed away, said: “I would like to thank everyone for the responsibility and trust they have placed in my with this appointment. I will lead this council in a professional and meaningful way.

“I want this to be an inclusive and focused administration that provides high-quality services in what are still uncertain times for residents and businesses.”

Cllr Michael Claughton (Con) was elected as Cllr Clakson's deputy leader.

Both appointments were made at last night’s cabinet meeting.

Before the appointments were announced, members stood for a minute’s silence in honour of Peter Wood.
