Poundland expansion confirmed in County Square Shopping Centre, Ashford

Poundland has confirmed that they will be moving into a larger unit in a shopping centre in Ashford.

It follows the news last week that the High Street branch will shut this Sunday, July 9.

A spokesman today has confirmed that the store WILL move into County Square in the town centre, linking in with rumours that it will take over the former BHS premises, which has been vacant since last July.

A Poundland spokesman said: “We're delighted to announce our Poundland expansion in Ashford over the Summer and are looking forward to welcoming some new faces to our existing teams during this transitional time.

"The expansion will see us move our County Square store to a larger site in the Square where families will also be able to shop for great fashion at affordable prices, through our Pep & Co clothing range.”

Pep & Co, a cut price clothing retailer, have already teamed up with dozens of other Poundland stores across the country.

On their website, they state: "At PEP&CO, it’s our mission to ensure families in every community spend less on their clothing.

"We offer fresh and exciting fashion ranges for the whole family at amazingly low prices.

"We firmly believe in keeping things simple and fuss-free to keep our costs low – this in turn keeps prices down for our customers, so they really can ‘spend a little, get a lot.'"

All stock in the High Street branch was reduced by 25% earlier in the week, and customers have been going mad for the bargains in the store today when stock was reduced to half price.

Stock is flying off the shelves, and some whole aisles have already been closed off because they cannot be replenished.

Staff in Poundland - which is based in the old Woolworths store - have been telling customers that the shop is closing and the firm aims to move into the BHS premises.

It is believed that the new Ashford store once created will be one of the biggest Poundland stores in Kent as the old BHS store has two floors.

It's understood that the other smaller exisiting Poundland store inside County Square will continue trading until the revamped BHS outlet is ready to open.

Up until the start of this year Poundland had THREE outlets in Ashford - in the High Street, in County Square and the Warren Retail Park.

But the firm's unit on the Warren Retail Park closed in February and is currently being revamped as a Home Bargains store.

Former tenant Poundland closed on February 1, just eight months after it opened.
