Ashford Borough Council submit plans for gas beacon

Ashford Borough Council have submitted plans for a gas beacon near to the Civic Centre for special events in the town.

It has been proposed by members of the council as a commemorative landmark for national and regional events such as the centenary of the end of the First World War and royal birthdays.

North Park in Tannery Lane is the preferred site, with easy public access to the gas beacon, which would overcome the risk of embers damaging wildlife and is safer in its operation.

Tarmac footpaths would run past the beacon, and the banners below the fire basket will generally display the town crests of Ashford and Tenterden, but this can be changed.

It has been designed depicting materials to reflect Ashford’s railway heritage.

The body and column of the structure would borrow from boiler and smoke stack of early locomotives, and the fire baskets would be formed using a combination of train wheels.

Other areas of the town which represent this theme include the town centre bandstand and fountain in high street.

Consultation on the application ends on Saturday, April 8.
