Farmer creates barrier to stop fire spreading

A farmer used his tractor to create a mound of earth to stop a field fire spreading.

The farmer used his machine with a cultivator, a form of plough, to build up a barrier against the blaze that had spread through two hectares of stubble at Hastingleigh, near Wye.

An Ashford Fire Station spokesman said: “The farmer was able to create a headland to provide a firebreak and prevent the fire spreading.”

Firefighters had used both hoses and beaters to tackle the blaze.

The blaze happened on land behind the village hall and fire crews were called at about 4.20pm on Saturday. Two engines, one from Ashford and one from Folkestone, were brought out along with a water unit.

Crews were at the scene for an hour and a half.
