An elderly woman is recovering in hospital today after being rescued by firefighters when she became trapped under a train.

The woman fell into a gap between the platform and a stationary train at the Tenterden Town Station in Station Road, Tenterden at 5.15pm on Saturday.

A volunteer from Kent and East Sussex Railway gave first aid to the woman, who landed by the non-electrified railway line.

South East Coast Ambulance Service and fire crews from Cranbrook and Maidstone were called to the scene.

Firefighters freed the woman and lifted her back onto the platform on a spinal longboard.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Sacha Taylor said: "It was an elderly female who appeared to have fallen into a gap between the station platform and a stationary train.

"We gave her some oxygen and then passed care onto the ambulance crews."

The woman, who was a member of Gravesend Active Retired Association, suffered a heart attack in the ambulance and was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

She is now in a stable condition and is expected to be released from hospital later this week.

Kent and East Sussex Railway (KESR) general manager Graham Baldwin said: "She did not lose consciousness and she was immediately attended to by a first aider.

"She suffered a minor heart attack when she was in the ambulance and she was taken to the William Harvey Hospital.

"Her daughter called us yesterday to pass on her grateful thanks to our staff who helped her."

During the incident, KESR staff and taxis went to Rolvenden station to collect 25 passengers left stranded on a train as they returned from Bodiam.
