Ashford: Pizza and tapas takeaway to move into former Starbets Gamin’ store

A former betting shop in Ashford is to be turned into a pizza and tapas takeaway after new plans were approved.

Thambiah Senthan, who runs the Premier convenience store in Hunter Avenue, Willesborough, wants to renovate the former Starbets Gamin’ store next door.

He had his plans approved by Ashford Borough Council last week – and now plans to open the takeaway before Christmas.

“The betting shop closed last year and I think people will be pleased to see it open again as something,” Mr Senthan said.

“I do not think there is any other tapas place in Ashford, so we will be offering something different.

“I have heard there was one place like that in the town a long time ago, but nothing like it now so I think it is a good idea.”

Mr Senthan, who has been running the Premier shop for four years, added: “The area has already improved, but there will be more choice when we open and I hope it will attract people,” he said.

“We are targeting a different market – everybody knows the chicken, kebab and fish and chip shops, but pizza and tapas is a little bit different.

“I love this area and it is a nice, friendly place.”

Mr Senthan, 36, will manage the shop and says he will employ two or three staff.

A new rear extraction flue will be installed before the takeaway opens.

“We will start slowly and see how it goes,” Mr Senthan said.

“I hope it will be popular and I plan to open before Christmas.

“That is my goal – and you have to aim for the stars.”
