Four charged after Kent Police officer bitten and hit with chair in Ashford High Street, near The Gorge cafe, after suspected theft from Tesco Extra

Three teenagers and a young man have been charged after a policeman was was bitten on the leg and hit over the head with a chair.

The attack, which left the officer in hospital suffering concussion, happened in Ashford High Street on Monday morning as he and a colleague attempted to arrest a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of stealing from Tesco Extra.

A 17-year old girl and a 15-year old boy, both from Ashford, have been charged with affray and bailed to appear in court on Monday, June 1.

Owen Lane, 20, of Imperial Way, Ashford, has been charged with affray and bailed to appear in court on the same date.

A 17-year old boy, also from Ashford, has been charged with assault with intent to resist arrest.

He has appeared in court and the case has been adjourned with a date to be confirmed.

The injured officer is now back home, police confirmed this afternoon.

Glass in the door of The Gorge cafe was broken during the commotion on Monday, which began at about 9.45am, and a second officer ended up with a cut thumb.

Witnesses reported hearing lots of screaming and shouting.
