A dung heap is alight in Criol Lane, Shadoxhurst, near Ashford

A large pile of horse manure is on fire in the village of Shadoxhurst, near Ashford.

Firefighters have been tackling the blaze since 3.50pm and although they now have the flames under control the muck, in Criol Lane, is still burning.

Two fire engines and a water unit were called to the rural location and foam is being used to fight the flames.

A spokesman told KentOnline the crews are "making good progress" but said it can take a long time to put out a burning dung heap.

Piles of manure can spontaneously combust in warm weather but the spokesman said it was too early to say what caused this fire.

No roads have been closed and no injuries reported.
