M20 junction 10 coastbound sliproad traffic lights causing motorway tailbacks

A notorious motorway slip road has once again seen tailbacks and near misses.

The coastbound slip road at junction 10 of the M20 has forced some commuters to look for alternative routes home from around 4.30pm.

People have taken to social media noting lorries swerving in and out of lanes and long delays due to out-of-sync traffic lights on the busy roundabout.

“It’s most nights. I try to avoid it where I can" says Richard Lloyd, 40.

The man from Aldington notes that the short length of time the lights are on for only allows for one lorry to pass through: "The lights are basically letting five vehicles through and as soon as one is a large goods vehicle, that is all that gets through due to slower speed.”

The Kentish Express reported on the issue last month after another reader, Jon Morrissey, also from Aldington, said that the lights were only green for around seven or eight seconds at a time.

Highways England said the lights’ timings had been recalibrated, but the issue appears to have returned once again.

Mr Lloyd said: “The queue forms in lane one or on the hard shoulder depending on, I guess, who makes the initial decision.

"On Tuesday evening last week the queue was back level with Givaudan and traffic in lane two continued to speed past with people cutting in at the last minute.

"The trucks were taking to lane three in a bid to avoid slowing. It isn’t a question of if, it’s a question of when in terms of a major incident.

“My view is and always has been that junction 10 flows better when the lights are faulty.”

The situation sparked a wave of comments on the Kentish Express Facebook page.

Sarah Crick said: “Soon there will be a serious accident here. I have witnessed people trying to jump the queue swerving in from second lane.”

Allie Cigerli said: “Lights are all out of sync. From Bad Munstereifel Road to William Harvey Hospital there’s problems due to timings.

“Just turn them off. Never any problems then. Honestly, how difficult can it be to sort this? It’s beyond a joke now.”

Lydia Adele noted: “Every time they fix them, it takes 1-2 weeks before they are back to the same thing again.

"The majority of people want the right hand lane so they can go right towards the A2070 or heading towards town so that stops people from getting into the left hand lane towards the hospital as the lane is blocked from all the people needing the right hand lane. Always think it works better without lights...”

Bev Pullen: “Have noticed these tailbacks every day this week. I’m travelling in the opposite direction. Thought it was due to an accident the first day but clearly not. Have seen it almost back to junction 9.”

In addition to people’s comments, a rush hour video has emerged showing the motorway queues in the left-hand lane heading back for over a mile one night last week.

Highways England were contacted for an updated statement. In a previous statement they said: “We treat driver safety with paramount importance.

“We have moved swiftly to resolve the synchronisation problems with the traffic lights of junction 10 of the M20.

“These lights are here to control traffic flow at peak times on this busy junction.

“These lights were recalibrated here while they were switched off over the Christmas period, with this work completed at the beginning of January.”
