Proposals for the major redevelopment of Ashford's Dover Place car park move closer

A scheme to establish a large new Commercial Quarter between Ashford railway station and the town centre is edging nearer.

A meeting of Ashford Borough Council's (ABC) Cabinet last night (Thursday) agreed the terms of the proposed land transaction that will pave the way for the project to progress.

The scheme is now expected to be agreed by a meeting of the full council next Thursday.

The proposal is for the creation of a large business hub, the centrepiece of which will be an 80,500 sq ft office block at Dover Place that will include office space with retail and restaurants on the ground floor together with car parking and landscaping.

The scheme also needs to be approved by ABC's planning committee next Wednesday.

Overall the Commercial Quarter proposal will include 590,000 square feet of office space and 150 homes.

The Commercial Quarter is one of ABC's Big 8 projects, major schemes which the council says will transform Ashford and regenerate the town centre.

ABC leader Cllr Gerry Clarkson said: “Taking this decision makes a significant statement about the council’s commitment to the regeneration of the town centre and demonstrates its faith and confidence in the borough."

He described the plans as an "exciting opportunity".

ABC is working with local developers Quinn Estates Ltd and George Wilson Holdings Ltd on the site earmarked for the new office building.

Mark Quinn, managing director of Quinn Estates Ltd, said: “We are delighted that Cabinet approval has been granted for the first phase of the Commercial Quarter.

"This is a transformational scheme for Ashford, providing modern office space in a sensational location."
