New Year train travel disrupted in latest Southern conductor strike

New Year travel is headed for disruption because of the latest three day strike by Southern conductors.

Today there is a reduced service across the whole Southern network. Some routes have no service at Victoria, London Bridge, Brighton, Southampton Central, Ashford International, Horsham, Uckfield and at Beckenham Junction.

Some trains may run to an amended timetable and some services, like the Ashford to Eastbourne line, have replacement buses.

Those headed to Gatwick Airport via London Victoria may encounter difficulties too because the Gatwick Express is also affected. There is no service between the airport and Brighton and trains are running every 30 minutes between Victoria and the airport due to the action.

All train users are urged to check travel information because some New Year's Eve services will finish early.

The rail operator is in dispute with the RMT and Aslef unions over changes to the role of guards on new trains.

The latest 72-hour walkout comes after a series of strikes in recent months. Another is set for Monday, January 9.

Southern's deputy chief operating officer, Alex Foulds, told BBC Kent: "Our best advice is to check on the day you travel, particularly if you are heading out to New Year celebrations, as services on some routes finish early in the evening.

"We are sorry that yet again passengers will have their plans disrupted by what is pointless industrial action. Our door remains open for meaningful talks."

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: "Our guards members on Southern Rail remain rock solid and absolutely determined in their action in defence of rail safety this morning Saturday).

"These are local people fighting for safe railways for their local communities and their commitment to that fight remains undiminished as we head into the New Year.

"The union repeats it's demand for Chris Grayling and his rail minister to get out of their bunker, stop the mud slinging and take up the offer from RMT for direct talks to sort out the worsening crisis on Britain's biggest rail franchise.

"Instead of continuing to attack rail staff, and back failing rail companies like Southern, the Transport Secretary should make it his New Year resolution to get in a room with the unions and his contractors to sort out the current shambles. "
