A Wye restaurant that closed earlier this month has been put up for sale.

The Wife of Bath, in Upper Bridge Street, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, is being offered for sale as a restaurant with all the contents included.

However, Ashford estate agent Taylor Riley Stafford, which is handling the sale, revealed the building also has permission to be used for retail or as a takeaway restaurant.

A message on the pub website reads: “With regret the Wife of Bath will close for business on Sunday 4 May.

“Thank you to everyone for their custom and support over the years.”

The restaurant first opened in 1963 and was named after Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury tale, and also in honour of the then owner’s wife, whom he had met in Bath.

The Victorian building has three en suite rooms and two cottage rooms at the rear and the dining room can seat up to 47 people.

Offers in the region of £675,000 are being invited for the freehold with vacant possession.
