Probe after Tesco driver allegedly attacks motorist at Drovers roundabout in Ashford

Tesco is investigating after one of its delivery drivers allegedly punched another motorist several times in a road rage incident.

Shocked drivers ran to the victim's aid at the busy Drovers roundabout in Ashford.

Trainer Monique Morgan - who was approaching the roundabout from Chart Road - had stopped at the traffic lights in Templer Way close to Waitrose when the Tesco van pulled up alongside her.

She said: "Someone beeped their horn, then the burly Tesco driver jumped out of his van, walked to the vehicle behind him, opened the driver's door and proceeded to assault him.

"He just kept hitting him until several drivers behind came running up and pulled the Tesco driver away from the victim.

'We are urgently investigating and will take the appropriate action...' - Tesco spokesman

"I don't know if anyone reported the incident to the police, but there were many witnesses as the Tesco van was the first vehicle in that lane and holding up traffic when the lights turned green."

Mrs Morgan - who drove to the Tesco Crooksfoot store to report the incident to the manager - says she feared for the driver who was assaulted.

"I truly believe that if the other drivers had not rushed over to stop the assault, the victim would have been beaten to a pulp," she said.

"The other driver looked harmless and only beeped once.

"I don't know if the Tesco van had come out of the Waitrose estate and cut him up or whether the Tesco driver had slammed his brakes on at the last minute when the lights turned red.

"When I heard the horn, I looked in my mirror to see who had beeped, thinking it was aimed at me, and I noticed the small grey vehicle was very close to the middle lane, as though he had had to swerve to avoid hitting the Tesco van.

"It happened so quickly and I was so shocked that I didn't think of filming the assault."

The alleged attack is said to have happened just after 9am last Thursday.

A Tesco spokesman said the supermarket giant is looking into the incident.

She said: “Abusive behaviour has absolutely no place within our business.

"We are urgently investigating and will take the appropriate action.”

Last week, a writer at The Gay UK Magazine claimed he was abused by an aggressive Tesco delivery man in Richmond in what he called a 'hate crime'.

Mark David Woollard from Staines-upon-Thames, Surrey, wrote on Twitter: "I have just been verbally and homophobically abused by a Tesco home delivery driver.

"He called me a batty boy."
