Almost spring-like conditions greeted runners who took part in the annual Tenterden 5 Mile race on Sunday.

They set off from Wittersham Village Hall, following a virtually traffic-free route. There was also a children’s race round a shorter course.

Organiser Martin Burke, from Nice Work, said: “The race was run in almost spring-like conditions, which was a bit of a shock but a pleasant surprise.

“We had 130 finishers, which was slightly down on last year but about the number we would expect. People are finding it hard to commit to a race because of the flooding.”

The race used to be called the Isle of Oxney Hot Soup Dash and was renamed the Tenterden 5 Mile.

“We still served homemade hot soup to all the finishers,” added Mr Burke.

The first runner home was Joshua Schofield in a time of 26 minutes 43 seconds. Around 12 youngsters took part in the children’s race.

Nice Work makes a donation from the entry fees to the village hall each year for hosting the event.
