Poplar trees cut down in Kennington, Ashford

Three gigantic poplar trees which dominated a suburban skyline have been chopped down after storm damage.

The poplars bordering Park Road and Ashborne Close in Kennington had stood proudly at 50ft high and were as tall as some of the nearby blocks of flats in Bybrook Road.

Residents reported seeing the tree surgeons moving in on Monday this week, and a team of five made short work of the job.

The trees stood in the garden of Antonino Comparetto, who has lived there since 1997 and had previously reduced the height of the trees.

The garden now looks completely transformed.

But he said the trees had grown back, and added that “enough was enough” after branches had fallen down and caused damage in recent storms.

He now has a plentiful supply of timber for anyone who might be interested in using it for stoves or fireplaces, and would be happy to let people take it for free.
