Travelux in Tenterden sold to Baldwins Travel based in Tunbridge Wells after founder Ian Hopley decides to retire

Established in 1972, Travelux will continue to trade under the same name and staff numbers will not be affected.

Its sale was prompted by the retirement of founder and director Ian Hopley and his co-director Linda Herbert.

The first action of the new owner, itself founded in 1895, will be to set up a Beaureux de Change in the Tenterden outlet in East Cross, just off the High Street.

As well as it’s Tunbridge Wells base, Baldwins has branches in Maidstone, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Uckfield in East Sussex.

Chairman Ron Marks said: “It’s a very similar firm to our existing business and fits hand in glove with our network.

“They do a lot of holidays and cruises at the top end and that fits in with a lot of what we do.”

Outgoing Travelux director Linda Herbert said: “It’s a great solution for everyone.

“The girls here are excited about it because they have got their jobs and careers.

“After doing this for more than 40 years, Ian felt it was time to step back and let younger blood run the business.

“Baldwins was a perfect match.”

At the year ending October 21, Baldwins had a turnover of more than £20m.

It has been awarded Travel Agent of the Year for London and the South East for the last six years.
