Chapel Down vineyard reports harvest growth by 131% in 2013 despite late start

Chapel Down vineyard has reported a record harvest this year.

Despite the harvest coming later than normal – in common with all other vineyards – the yield was up 131% on last year.

The Tenterden-based company reported the fruit has been generally very good with some parcels of excellence.

Chapel Down Group chief executive Frazer Thompson said: “Overall the harvest has exceeded our expectations given the late start to the growing season.

“Following two lean years, this year’s harvest will enable us to increase production so that we can start to meet demand over the next few years."

The vineyard won three gold medals at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards, as well as the regional trophy for best sparkling wine for the Blanc de Blancs.

Mr Thompson added: “It has been frustrating to win so many accolades for our wines in 2013, and yet have to disappoint so many customers through a lack of stock.

“The news about this year’s harvest will be warmly welcomed by the wine trade and our customers alike.”
