Fire and police called to rescue woman who climbed onto roof of William Harvey Hospital in Ashford

Emergency crews were called to the William Harvey Hospital after reports a female patient was "running around" on the roof.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene in Willesborough, Ashford, at 2.30 this morning after another patient alerted hospital staff.

Police and fire crews liaised on how to bring the woman down, but a spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said he believes it was actually a hospital porter who eventually convinced the woman to come down.

He said: "We were called after reports someone was running around on the roof and the hospital were concerned in case she fell. We have a height vehicle and so are able to access high points.

"She had got onto a low pitched roof and then climbed to the highest point.

"In the end one of the hospital staff, I think he was a porter, managed to get on to the roof from inside access and convince her to come down safely.

"We don't think she climbed up there with the intention to jump but we were called because the hospital were concerned about getting her down."

Fire crews were at the scene for about an hour.

Police confirmed officers were called to the scene at 3.19am to a report that a woman was on the roof of a building in the area of Kennington Road.

The woman came down at around 4.30am and she is now in the care of the hospital.
