Paul Chambers praised the attitude and spirit of his Ashford United side after watching them pull off a dramatic late comeback to win 4-3 at Holmesdale.

Trailing 3-1 on Saturday with six minutes left, they grabbed an unlikely victory in the Southern Counties East League at Oakley Road in Bromley to end the week on a high, following a big low, five days earlier, when they were humbled 5-0 at home in the FA Vase by Norwich United.

Boss Chambers said: “The boys have got a never-say-die attitude, which made sure they kept going.

“We started brightly, went 1-0 up and had some good chances to score two or three.

“Holmesdale then got back into it and scored a couple themselves, one of them a good one (from hat-trick man Rikki Cable).

“They then got a third but we went on to create a few more chances to get back into it, fighting and fighting until the final whistle to get the result.”

Reflecting on the Norwich game, Chambers added: “There are not many occasions when my team doesn’t turn up but we didn’t put in a tackle or header on the night and got what we deserved.”

The 5-0 reverse was the biggest defeat at Homelands for five seasons since the 6-0 drubbing by then Ryman League, Division 1 South champions-elect Croydon Athletic at the end of season 2009-2010.

Ashford entertain former Kent League side Croydon on Saturday, looking to extend their unbeaten home league record.
