Hundreds of students queued for up to an hour for a free meal at the city’s newest takeaway.

They snapped up an offer of a free six-inch baguette and drink from the sandwich chain Subway, running from 3pm to 5pm on Tuesday.

Among those queueing at the new store on Upper Bridge Street were Christ Church University students John Rose and Jordan Cook, both 20.

Jordan said: “We are hard-up students and as it was free, we put up with the wait.”

Owner Raj Pathania, who also runs the Subway takeway in Mercery Lane, estimated he would be giving away about 400 free meals in the two hours.

He said: “Ourt core business is students so we wanted to give something back.

“We have also created 15 new jobs and many of them have gone to students.”
