An elderly woman has been airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after she was hit by a motorbike in Canterbury this afternoon.

The 74-year-old, from the city, was thought to have emerged from between two parked cars to cross Forty Acres Road when she was struck at 1.40pm.

The motorcyclist then crashed into a parked car while he attempted to avoid the woman. He was left shaken, but unhurt.

Police closed the road for more than an hour while paramedics helped the woman.

The air ambulance landed in St Stephens playing field, before taking her to the specialist head injury unit at King's College Hospital in London.
