Kent Wildlife Trust puts on Blean Festival to help youngsters get a taste of outdoors

A host of fun outdoor events should entertain families during half-term week across Canterbury and Swale's ancient woodlands.

The week, running from May 27 to June 2, is part of Kent Wildlife Trust's five-year Heritage Lottery-funded Blean Project.

Full details can be found on the wildlife trust's website, but details of some of the highlights are below:

  • Bank Holiday Monday May 27 - Bigbury Revealed at Bigbury Nature Reserve, Harbledown. 10am - 4pm. Step back in time and experienceBigbury Camp as it was in 54BC. Meet up with the local Cantii tribe as they face the25,000-strong Roman invasion, and diiscover the hidden side of the recently restored IronAge Hillfort (a Scheduled Ancient Monument, thought to be the site of Caesar's firstbattle). Free entry.
  • Bank Holiday Monday - Roman Ramble.From Canterbury Roman Museum to Bigbury Hillfort. 10.30am - 4pm. Free family-friendly 5.5 mile walk (including a two-hour break at the Bigbury Revealed event).
  • From Tuesday May 28 to Saturday June 1. A variety of themed walks includingdawn chorus; nightjar encounter;woods in bloom; jewels of the woods; moths by moonlight;woodcraft skills day; wild art & crafts day; family cycle ride (Crab & Winkle Way) andmore.
  • Sunday June 2 - the fete of the Blean, Canterbury Academy, 10am - 4pm. A variety of outdoor activities plus an indoorconference to round off the week. Featuring family activities, local food and drink, Morrisdancing, live music, wild art, clay modelling, archery, face painting, woodcraft, willowweaving, rag rug making, falconry display, and a series of talks. TV presenter, Kaddy LeePreston, will make a guest appearance.
