Serious crash closes A2 between Canterbury and Dover

Five people including two children were injured when a car flipped in a serious crash, which closed the A2 between Lydden Hill and the A260.

Emergency crews including police, firefighters and paramedics were called at around 1.30pm after the car rolled, coming to rest in a layby.

One of the children was flown to King's College Hospital in London with a head injury. Another two patients, including one aged 10, was taken to the same hospital by road.

All traffic was held to allow the air ambulance to land on the carriageway.

Firefighters had to cut one of the people involved free from the wreckage.

The London-bound side re-opened at around 3.15pm, and the coast-bound stretch re-opened at around 5.30pm.

Kent Police's roads unit tweeted to say trapped traffic was turned around to travel the wrong way down the carriageway and exit the A2 via the A260 towards Folkestone.

Crash investigators examined the scene and debris was cleared from the road.

A police spokesman said earlier: "Kent Police is attending a report of a collision on the coastbound carriageway of the A2 near Lydden. A car left the road and came to a stop in a layby.

"The road has been shut in both directions while the air ambulance attends the scene."
