Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby calls for fixed Easter date

The Archbishop of Canterbury wants Easter to fall on the same Sunday every year.

With this year’s Easter Sunday on March 27 and next year’s on April 16, there is never a set date for the holiday, unlike other Christian events like Christmas.

The Most Reverend Justin Welby said: “I would expect between five and 10 years time.

“I wouldn’t expect it earlier than that, not least because people have probably printed their calendars for the next five years.”

Mr Welby will need to consult with other authorities including Pope Francis and the Coptic Pope to negotiate the change of date.

He also warned that churches have been attempting to fix the date since the 10 century.

He added: “School holidays and so on are all fixed. It affects almost everything you do in the spring and summer.

“The answer is I don’t know but I would love to see it before I retire.”
