Teenager charged with serious assault in Canterbury city centre

A teenager has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm following an attack in the city centre which left a man with a fractured eye socket and cheek bone.

The 17-year-old from Strood, who cannot be named because he is a juvenile, is due before Canterbury youth court today.

The youth, who is also under investigation for robbery, is alleged to have assaulted the 23-year-old in Longmarket around 9pm on Saturday night.

The arrest and charge follows a spate of three assaults on the same day in the city.

The first took place between 1.15pm and 1.40pm when two men were alleged to have been assaulted and robbed on the riverside path near Kingsmead Road.

The second incident happened at about 3pm when two further people reported being assaulted on the riverside path.

The third incident in Longmarket, for which the youth is charged, resulted in the man being taken to hospital.

Detective Constable Tom Banks said: ‘We are continuing to investigate the three incidents and appeal to anyone who witnessed them and hasn’t already spoken to our officers to contact us.

‘We would also like to hear from anyone with information that could help our investigation.’
