Kentish Gazette urges Canterbury authorities to all they can to secure visit of Tower of London poppies installation

The Kentish Gazette has launched a petition urging city authorities to do all in their power to bring the stunning Tower of London poppy exhibition to Canterbury.

The organisation behind the moving tribute – 14-18 Now – has announced that part of the display will go on tour around the country so it can be further appreciated by those who did not see it in the capital.

Gazette editor Leo Whitlock said: “It seems to us that Canterbury – with its Anglican mother church and long military associations – would be an ideal location in Kent for the exhibit.

“It would provide a great opportunity to remember all those in the county who made sacrifices in the Great War and Second World War.”

When the Gazette last week revealed the possibility of the exhibit coming to Canterbury, it prompted a huge response from readers.

Now the newspaper has launched a petition on change.org which, can be supported by clicking here.

It is also writing to the organisers, urging them to consider Canterbury as one of the locations.

Although the exhibit is being dismantled and the ceramic poppies sold off for charity, the metal structure part – called the Weeping Window and The Wave – is set to tour the country after gaining sponsorship from the Lady Susie Sainsbury’s Backstage Trust and the Clore Duffield Foundation.

The tour is being supported by the government.

Prime minister David Cameron said: “Although millions have made the journey to the Tower of London, many more have wanted to do so but have not been able to get there.

“The whole country suffered terribly from the loss of loved ones a hundred years ago, so it is only right that everyone should have the opportunity to see this moving tribute closer to home.”

Already, the city council and Canterbury Cathedral have indicated that they would like to help bring the exhibit to Canterbury.

Council spokesman Rob Davies said: “There has been no information announced yet about the logistics for this, the size of it, what security may be needed and other practical points.

“We’re keeping a close eye on the 14-18 Now website for any announcements, but would reiterate our interest in the poppies coming to Canterbury if we can make it happen.”
