Canterbury City Council triggers severe weather emergency protocol to help rough sleepers

Canterbury City Council is pledging to provide shelter for rough sleepers over the upcoming freezing nights.

The authority has triggered its severe weather emergency protocol - meaning it will work with homeless charities to provide a home for those sleeping rough.

Those found to be in need during the cold nights will be offered accommodation such as bed and breakfast or temporary housing.

The emergency protocol is introduced by the council when the temperature drops to 0C or below for at least three consecutive days.

During the last 16-day activation period earlier this month, 46 rough sleepers took shelter for a total of 282 nights.

If you know of a rough sleeper in need of assistance call 01227 464904 during the day, or 01227 781879 in out of office hours.
