A suspected drink driver injured in an early-morning crash in Sturry Road was in a car being chased by police, it has emerged.
He was taken to hospital after the VW Passat ploughed into a roundabout near Asda at 4am.
The road was closed for almost seven hours.
Rush-hour motorists were diverted away from the scene, which was a hive of police activity throughout the morning.
It is understood officers were called to McDonald’s on the Stour Retail Park by staff concerned a drive-thru customer was drunk.
When they arrived at the scene, the car sped off towards the city centre.
It was pursued by police and crashed into the roundabout, opposite Greggs and Subway.
More officers and paramedics were called to the scene and one man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
He and another man - both in their 20s and in the same car - were arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
The road reopened at about 10.45am.
