Underwear thrown onto the stage as Sir Tom delights his audience at the Spitfire Ground in Canterbury.

Whether you're a fan of a particular artist or not, there are certain songs and performers that have become a staple background throughout our lives and when the chance comes to see a music legend perform live, I was glad not to have missed the opportunity.

Tom Jones fits comfortably into that description.

The 77-year-old has been entertaining generations of fans since the mid sixties with more than 100 million record sales worldwide and string of Top 40 hits here and in the US including three UK Number Ones.

It was in Vegas in the late 1960s where the sun-tanned, thrusting music machine gained a reputation for sexually-charged fans to hurl their knickers and hotel room keys at the stage and, even in the refined surroundings of the home of Kent cricket in Canterbury several items of lingerie were launched from the crowd.

The evening opened with Team Tom's finalists from The Voice UK, Welsh duo, Into The Ark. Taylor Jones and Dane Lloyd warmed up the crowd perfectly with songs from their new album as well as Burning Love and Right Track.

Playing his first ever gig in the city, the silver-haired, bronzed superstar took to the stage and delivered a conveyor belt of hits from his enormous back catalogue including What’s New Pussycat, Sex Bomb, The Green Green Grass of Home with the inevitable audience participation through Delilah and It's Not Unusual.

The incredibly versatile performer demonstrated his huge range of styles taking us from rythym and blues, rock n roll to gospel with obvious influences from his childhood days singing in church which came across as being touching, heartfelt and personal.

The energy that came from this veteran performer defied his years, barely breaking a sweat as he effortlessly powered his way through his set.

The evening finished with a tribute to Prince with Kiss, a party boogie woogie piano set and an impromptu acapella two-way serenade of ‘Those Were The Days’.

Thanks Sir Tom, you will always be the man with - The Voice.
