Canterbury couple Sue and Garry Coombes 'wanted someone to say sorry' after pet Maisie was killed

A couple whose beloved dog was killed by a car have expressed their relief now the driver responsible has come forward.

Sue and Garry Coombes’ pet poodle-sheltie cross Maisie was mown down outside their home in Woodside Road, Sturry, on Wednesday, August 20.

As the 18-month-old dog lay seriously injured in the road, Mr Coombes watched in horror as the brown Peugeot sped off without stopping.

In the aftermath, the couple – both postal workers – launched a desperate appeal through KentOnline to find the driver.

They also launched a Facebook page attracting nearly 1,000 members, and issued CCTV footage of the car.

This week, Mrs Coombes, 53, thanked KentOnline for the publicity – and for highlighting the fact it is illegal not to stop after running over a dog.

She said: “It’s a huge weight off our minds.

“This was never about anything except asking someone to stand up and say sorry.

“It doesn’t bring Maisie back, but it’s helped us to get some closure.

“We really appreciate KentOnline's help and everyone’s support.”

Police confirmed a woman had contacted them about the incident, but officers are waiting to take a statement from her.
