Car crashed in Sturry Road, Canterbury, after police chase

A man injured in an early-morning crash in Canterbury was in a car being chased by police, it has emerged.

He was taken to hospital after the VW Passat ploughed into a roundabout near Asda in Sturry Road at 4am.

The road was closed for more than six hours, but reopened at around 11am.

Rush-hour motorists were diverted away from the scene, which was a hive of police activity throughout the morning.

It is understood officers were called to McDonald’s on the Stour Retail Park by staff concerned a drive-thru customer was drunk.

When they arrived at the scene, the car sped off towards the city centre.

It was pursued by police and crashed into the roundabout, opposite Greggs and Subway.

More officers and paramedics were called to the scene and one man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Two men in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
