Man arrested as girl hit by car on crossing in Wingham High Street

A 78-year-old man has been arrested after a young girl was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing in Wingham.

The youngster – thought to be aged just five - was taken to a London hospital with serious injuries after the collision at 5.15pm yesterday.

Witnesses say she was knocked down on the pelican crossing outside The Anchor pub in the High Street.

The road was closed in both directions, sparking delays in the area.

Police say the girl’s injuries are “not thought to be life-changing”.

The driver of the car was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving.

He has been bailed until February 13.
