Canterbury murder probe launched after body found in tent

A man is being quizzed on suspicion of murder following the grim discovery of decomposing human remains behind an industrial estate.

The victim, thought to be in his 60s, was found in a tent in woodland near the Riverside Retail Park and is believed to have been living rough.

Police have today confirmed that a 29-year-old man from Eltham, south London, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Due to the state of decomposition, officers have yet to identify the body and it is believed they are awaiting the results of DNA testing.

Post mortem tests have yet to establish a cause of death.

Senior investigating officer, DI Tony Pledger, said: “We believe the body had been undiscovered for around 9 months.

“We are keen to be able to establish exactly when the man died.

"The man associated with the tent may have been known by people locally and I would ask people to cast their minds back and let us know if they saw him in August 2015 or after this time.”

Yesterday KentOnline reported how police had taped off the scene off Ten Perch Road near B&M Bargains – just over two weeks since the body was discovered.
