Canterbury man's rape arrest after distressed woman found by taxi driver

A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman reported being sexually assaulted in Canterbury in the early hours of Sunday.

The alleged victim, thought to be in her 30s, was found in a distressed state by a taxi driver in Wincheap at about 4.30am, and taken to a safe place.

A 38-year-old man from Canterbury was arrested yesterday and bailed until November 2 while the investigation continues.

The attack is said to have happened in a private address in the Wincheap area.

Detective Constable Charlotte Underwood said: "Officers are carrying out enquiries in the area and we want to thank those members of the public who have assisted with the investigation so far.

"If there are any witnesses who remember seeing a distressed woman in the Wincheap area and have not yet spoken to police, we urge them to get in touch.

"In particular we are keen to trace the good Samaritan taxi driver who stopped to offer help to the victim and would urge him to contact Kent Police as soon as he can."
