Labour Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry joins campaign trail in Canterbury

Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry will be in Canterbury this afternoon on the election campaign trail to back Labour candidate Rosie Duffield.

Mrs Thornberry, who graduated from the University of Kent in Law, previously challenged long-sitting Conservative Julian Brazier for the Canterbury/Whitstable seat in 2001 and was only defeated by 2,069 votes.

Labour's Rosie Duffield defeated Sir Julian Brazier by 187 votes.

Now MP for Islington South and Finsbury, she was forced to resign as Shadow Attorney General in 2014 after being accused of snobbery when she tweeted a photograph of a house in Rochester decked out with the flags of St George.

Mrs Thornberry will be speaking at 1.30pm outside Cafe Rouge in the High Street and at 2pm in the Dane John Gardens.

An announcement on Ms Duffield's Facebook page says: "We're really excited to be welcoming Emily back to our city, so please share to make your friends aware and come along and hear about Labour's plans for the NHS, Brexit and why you should back Rosie as your next MP."
