Howletts wild animal park snow leopards move into new home

Two snow leopards at Howletts wild animal park are exploring their new surroundings after moving into a new enclosure.

Ziva and Nuri’s new 1,200sq m home, which is designed to look like a natural habitat, was refurbished throughout the summer.

The leopards, who were previously in the woodland walk area of the park, now reside next to the Pavillion.

Animal director Neil Spooner said: “We’ve been working hard to make this the perfect environment for our beautiful snow leopards.

“Although there is still some planting and finishing off to do, Ziva and Nuri have already been spotted relaxing on the platforms and exploring the rocks.”

With minimal mesh fencing, the open-fronted and open-top enclosure offers visitors a range of views of the rare species.

Mr Spooner added: “Snow leopards are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful big cats in the world.

“Hunting for their stunning coats, together with destruction of their habitat, has decreased their numbers dramatically.

“Howletts is part of a European breeding programme designed to boost the numbers of this species and we certainly hope that Ziva and Nuri’s new home will herald the patter of tiny paws in the future.”
