Suspect bag had police racing to Palace Street close to Canterbury Cathedral

Police were called to a suspicious bag left on top of a bin in the sight of Canterbury Cathedral this afternoon.

Officers attended Palace Street at just before 1pm and searched the Adidas sports bag to find it contained an old games console.

Security is high around major UK buildings in the wake of the terror attack at Westminster last month.

Richard Jones was one of those who watched events in Palace Street unfold.

The 46-year-old from London Road said: "When I first saw it, there was one of the council's enforcement officers guarding it and warning people not to go near it it.

"The police turned up pretty quickly, put some rubber gloves on and looked through the bag before taking it away."

The big was left on a bin next to the old St Alphedge Church.

Police spokesman Amanda Wills said: "We were called to a report that a suspicious bag had been left on a bin in Palace Street.

"Officers attended and the bag was checked and found to contain an old games console."
