Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? covered by Canterbury Academy staff to raise money for charity

By their own admission, many of them would not impress The X-Factor judges.

But teachers and support staff at The Canterbury Academy have been in the recording studio to produce their own version of the hit charity Band Aid song Do They Know It’s Christmas.

About 30 staff, including principal Phil Karnavas, flexed their vocal chords for the track, which they recorded in the campus’s own studio for a bit of festive fun while raising money for charity.

And it has already proved a hit, racking up more than 13,000 views.

Last year the staff had some fun with the popular “Elf Yourself” video stunt.

But this time, head of house Vicki Holman had the idea to record the song and put the video on YouTube.

Rebecca Huckle, who is also a head of house at Canterbury High, filmed and edited the footage.

She said: “It was great fun, even though some of the singing was not so great and there were some quite painful performances.

“But we weren’t taking it seriously and the idea was also to raise some money for our own Brian Wickham Fund while providing a bit of fun for the students, who see the staff in a new light.

“He was a deputy head who sadly died about eight years ago and now we have a fund in his memory which helps supports disadvantaged children at the school.

“So far we have collected about £70, mainly from the staff, but are hoping for more donations.

"We are selling copies of it on DVD for a donation of £3 and they can be obtained by emailing me at rhuckle@canterbury, kent.sch.uk.”

Last year the school raised £10,000 for charity from various activities and is on course to raise more this year.
