Beverley Meadow: Travellers move onto Canterbury field

Travellers have moved onto Canterbury's popular Beverley Meadow.

Caravans and several other vehicles are believed to have been at the field since yesterday.

Canterbury City Council enforcement officers visited the site to the north of the city last night.

A council spokesman said: "Travellers have arrived at Beverley Meadow in Canterbury.

"Our enforcement officers were on site last night requiring them to move on and conducting the welfare checks required by law.

"They will continue to monitor the situation especially in relation to litter.

"In the meantime, we will work as quickly as the law allows to resolve the situation."

This is not the first time travellers have occupied the St Stephen's field.

Last June, KentOnline reported that a group of about 20 caravans moved onto the popular open space, where they remained for five days.
