Canterbury: Anti-Brexit flashmob descends on city centre

More than 100 people gathered in Canterbury city centre to protest about Brexit.

Organisers hailed the flashmob, which was watched by 40,000 people on a Facebook livestream, an "incredible" success.

Protesters waved flags and carried posters as they gathered outside Primark in the city centre yesterday afternoon.

Organiser Louise Hummerstone says the event was what Remainers had been waiting for.

"It was so successful and the response has been incredibly overwhelming," she said.

"It was a chance for young and old to have their say in public on the Brexit vote.

"Our democracy has been stolen and that is something we are very angry about - I want to smash the TV when politicians say Brexit is for the good of the country."

Mrs Hummerstone believes the public were misled during the referendum vote in June last year.

The potter added: "The whole referendum was based on lies and there wasn't a proper remain campaign.

"I don't want my grandchildren growing up in a Brexit country. The idea of them having to makes me weep.

"Since coming up with the protest idea, it has grown like a mushroom but I had no idea how many people were going to be there.

"It was brilliant to have so many people and the livestream on Facebook was viewed by 40,000 people.

"I would be surprised if we don't take to the streets of Canterbury again."
