Behind the scenes at War Horse as national tour begins at Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre

War Horse has started its tour of theatres around the nation in Kent - and we've been given a sneak-peek behind the scenes.

Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre is playing host to the multi award-winning stage show until Saturday, October 14.

To celebrate, KentOnline and KMTV went along to see how the mechanical horses work.

Our reporter took a look at the way the puppeteers communicate during a show to make sure they know what is coming next.

The creators of the show have been working with puppet experts from the Handcrafting Puppet Company, which built the puppets.

Basil Jones, who has been working on the show said: "To have an animal as an animal, particularly as a horse, this is a revisiting of that wonderful relationship."

Meanwhile bosses at the theatre are excited about the show starting its trip around the country at its venue.

Mark Everett from the Marlowe Theatre said: "It is a culmination of dreams.

"War Horse was always high on our list of shows to host here.

"It's the biggest thing we've done."
