Thousands lined the streets of Whitstable on Saturday, to witness the spectacle of the 116th annual carnival.

The sun shone down as a colourful parade of 17 floats from organisations and carnival courts processed through the town.

Highlights included an entry from Glenn’s Barbers in Swalecliffe. Owner Glenn Snook invited 40 members of his modern stone-age family to a reunion on his Flintstones-themed float.

As well as carnival royalty, there were also Disney princesses aboard the Wheatsheaf pub’s entry, which adopted a fairytale theme.

Staff from Tim Day Construction walked like Egyptians alongside their pyramid-shaped float, while the team from Whitstable Dental Centre swapped scrubs for blue tutus.

Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Tinman abandoned the yellow brick road to follow the carnival route as part of their Wizard of Oz themed entry.

Entertainment was provided by four different majorettes troupes and the Sea Cadets’ band, which also entered a float.

Whitstable Carnival Association spokesman Carol Simmons said: “It went very well. We were so lucky with the weather, which was an improvement on last year when it rained.

“There were some very good entries, but the Flintstones float from Glenn’s Barbers was particularly impressive.

“It was a great spectacle, and the crowds seemed to really enjoy it.”

Organisations and charities based in Whitstable will be able to apply for a share of the money collected during the carnival in September.
